The word “Christ” comes from the Greek word Christos, which is a translation of the Hebrew word Messiah. Christians believe in Jesus Christ, a myth told to distract people from the reality/truth of the character and teaching of Jesus of Nazareth.
Messiah/Christ is a mythological idea much the same way that Santa Claus is, created for immature minds and used to control and manipulate people. Just as Santa Claus is an idea of a person who will come and shower presents on those who believe in him, so too is the Messiah/Christ someone who will come and save people from the evils of the world or from themselves.
The person of Jesus, his life, and his teachings are too radical and liberating for people who are so used to being told they are flawed and weak. And, the ruling classes don’t want people to be confident and empowered; they want people to be weak and submissive.
People stick with the myth over the reality of Jesus because their whole emotional support system, the family and friends, are subscribed to that myth. So, if they then reject the myth, they fear that this support system will reject them, and they would be lost without that system.
